Third Analytic Paper

For the third analytic paper I decided to critique Kyle Dahl’s project. I think that this is a really interesting project that he has going on and I really liked the video editing and such that you used to complete your project for this class. I really think it’s cool that you guys are tackling such a big project for your capstone class. In your project you really seem to be incorporating both new and old media and this can definitely help you with the economics of media also. You guys have a lot you could do with this and it looks like it’s going to turn out to be an awesome project.

The old media associated with this video is obviously the introduction of video editing and video shooting in the past. This video is digitized which makes it new and it talks about a new product, fade, which is another reason why it is new. The economics of this new media will let you earn money on this game if it takes off, and as you pointed out this video could be used in the advertising aspect of the marketing campaign that you may or may not put forward to spread the word of your game. I really also enjoyed the remixing aspect of the video and how you incorporated screen capture in with the video it really got the point across that you were wanting to make.

You are creating a new media that helps educate people on how this game was made, and people of the past could only write about it because it was much more difficult to make videos back then. Lawrence Lessig talks directly about what you’re creating as writing when he says, ‘It is no surprise, then, that these other forms of “creating” are becoming an increasingly dominant form of “writing.”’. He talks about the way that creating this new media is the new form of how writing used to be. The connections are vast that you are doing something that someone in the past never could have done, so they just wrote. That is what you’re doing, your writing through your media and incorporating things of the current that people of the past could not have used before.

Saying that, this also incorporates different kinds of old media as Lister says it, “old media in new times”. Because this is still a video, nothing too special about it right? That’s what I am also trying to argue just so that you can see what I’m saying. Videos have been around for years and yours is a ‘new’ video, but it’s still just a video. This really isn’t a form of remediation because you created it new and it’s about a video game that is new. It’s just a good habit to look at the past and see what this video is coming from and to see what has influenced its creation and how it was made possible, with that said it is still a very good video.

It is really cool that you are engaging in participatory culture and creating your own page in the book.  As the website says you are creating a video that will be in the many to many market which according to the participatory media literacy website is, “Many-to-many media now makes it possible for every person connected to the network to broadcast and receive text, images, audio, video, software, data, discussions, transactions, computations, tags, or links to and from every other person.” I wanted to say that you are doing a great job in creating this media and that it will be there for many others to see. You have created an item because of this culture that was created for us and you’re engaged as part of the creative class.

With all of this said you have created an amazing video that engages individuals and teaches us a little bit about how the media was made. There is a lot going into this video and project and I want to let you know what it looks like you have learned a lot along the way and will continue to pursue this goal of yours to create this video game. I think that you guys have something good going and should continue on your path of participatory culture to finish this game and incorporate things both from the new and the old media. It was an overall great video and a great project idea.

Welcome and Guidelines

Welcome to the class blog for I310. This is the forum for posting reading summaries, reading application examples, and various things related to the course media project (or just the course itself).

This blog will get pretty full over the course of the semester, and hopefully it will be full of things that will be potentially useful and that you might want to use as reference later on. For these reasons it is extremely important that you categorize and tag your posts so that there will be a way to sift through them all! There are categories for reading summaries and application examples, and when you post each of these things you should also minimally tag it with the topic it deals with. And the ‘Inspiration’ category is for examples that can inspire your projects.

Happy blogging!
